Probably Jazz. Jazz was doing pretty well until two things happened. First Jazz was getting more esoteric, and the free Jazz movement started which turned many people off to Jazz. Then the Beatles happened, which just eliminated any chance that Rock beat music was going to go away for the rest of the century. There also was a threat of teen idol pop singers, and easy listening music taking over the air waves completely, again the Beatles changed everything. Mabye some music critics were seeing Country as the next big thing, but it's just not universally accepted enough for the masses to like it like Rock'n'Roll.
