You first need to Draw the elctron configurateion for Each Element. Then simply count how many unpaired electrons there are.

I drew a diagram for you: http://server6.theimagehosting.com/image.php?img=untitled2.145.JPG

Sulfer = TWO unpaired electron
Argon = ZERO / NONE unpaired electron

4 2

sulfur 2
argon 0

the valence electrons in sulfur fill up 4 of the 6 spots in the p orbitals
this leaves 2 unpaired spots

the valence electrons in argon fill up all possible spots so there are no unpaired spots
