My husband is Asian and my daughter is half. I have never heard of this and I apologize for not really answering your question but my guess would be to keep the sun out of their face. Our family is muslim and there is no religious connection that I know of. But if they are Hindu or some other kind of religion it certainly could be connected. Hope you find your answer.

Darker skin is supposed to be associated with work. if you work in the fields, the sun beats down on you and browns your skin. If your skin is not brown, it means you are wealthy enough to have someone work in the fields for you, and you can stay inside or under the safety of your umbrella and your skin can stay milky white.
