Swimming is a great overall way to get fit, stay fit and is considered a lifetime sport.. for young and old..

It is low impact and combines Cardio with Muscle soo it targets the entire body not just one area.
You can do certan exercises or strokes to target weak areas as well...

It improves overall health.. for posture I would think it would improve it along with simply being more aware of poor posture.. the added muscel strenght should help.

If you are about to begin working out and are nto familiar with swim and swim gear...

I suggest a good pair of silicone goggles like speedos Hydrospecs.. they are durable,, and yet the strapping is easy to use..
You might also choose to wear a swim cap if you do not want the chlorine in your hair... Some people even put a deep conditoner on thier hair under the cap to condition the hair while they work out.. just dont take it off in the pool....

For a beginner... Makes ure you stretch and also warm up slowly in the water and stetch when you are done

Kickboards are great for warmups...

GOod Luck

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercising, but I believe doing Pilates and Yoga would be your best bet for improving posture.

yes it is since you use all your muscles and aligning them more to say! my 10, almost 11 year old brother is swimming almost year round and he has very good posture. it lengthens your muscles and makes you sit straighter, better, have your spine aligned better. also incorporate either yoga or pilates with swimming since it will give you the best results!

swimming is good excersize, though i'm not sur it will imrpove posture. most swimmers find that the more muscles they develope in swimming, the more they tend 2 hunch they're shoulders over. especially if they really lik butterfly.
