If they judge you and put you on the defensive, then it will detract attention from what they are doing. They figure you'll be too busy defending yourself to judge them.

This is human psychology and very natural behavior that everyone quickly passes judgements and forms opinions based on their knowledge. The same goes along with being judged by others because most people don't like rejection of any kind. It is like the dog chasing the cat that chases the rat, it goes in one big circle and eventually one catches up with the other.

People don't want the time to know others so they judge them since they find it less troubling, or they do it to hide their own imperfections and make themselves look "perfect".

you pretty much just answered your own question. the reason that people judge other people is because they are afraid of getting judged.

Being judgemental is a past-time for most people. They figure if they can judge other people that can outweigh their inperfections.
