Madison has some great used bookstores to choose from. St. Vincent DePaul on Williamson st. has a very large used book section, both fiction and non fiction ($2 for hardcover, $1 for paperback). Frugal Muse in the High Point shopping center has a fantastic selection of all types of books. Half priced books both east and west side stores is ok, a little more pricey than frugal muse. Downtown has both Shakespeare's books (the largest used bookstore in Madison, it's on the Capitol square) and Avol's on Johnson - just off State st.
There's a pretty good used/new bookstore on Monroe st. I think it's called bookstore at the end of the universe.

ST. Vincents is the best for really cheap books.

Hope this helped
