To find the number of digits you will need, compute ceiling( log 78 / log 8 ) = 3, where ceiling(x) is the smallest integer >= x.

Therefore 78 = a2 * 8^2 + a1 * 8^1 + a0 * 80
= 64*a2 + 8*a1 + a0.

To find the digits, divide 78/64 = 1, with remainder 14, so a2=1.

Work with the remainder: 14/8 = 1, with remainder 6, so a1=1.

Finally, 6/1 = 6, with remainder 0, so a0=6.

Therefore 78 in base 10 = 116 in base 8.
