Clemens to Be Free Agent; Undecided on '07
Too Early to Think About Next Season, Rocket Says
By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP
DALLAS (Nov. 2) -- Roger Clemens will file for free agency, but the seven-time Cy Young Award winner insists he hasn't decided whether he will pitch for the Houston Astros or anyone else next year.

"I just think it's too early to think about it. ... Right now, I don't have any thoughts of playing or not playing."

The 44-year-old Clemens didn't say when he will make up his mind about a 23rd season in the majors.

If Clemens does come back, it will likely to be for Houston, the New York Yankees , Boston or Texas . Any team outside that quartet is unlikely.

"Probably not," he said. "I don't see myself going outside that situation."

The Rocket went 7-6 with a 2.30 ERA in 19 starts last season with his hometown Astros, delaying the start of his season until late June.

Would you want Clemens on your favorite team?

I think he has proved the devalue of a part time starter. I suppose he has earned that right considering his incredible stature as maybe one of the 5 greatest pitchers ever to play the game. But the reality is that any team competing for a world championship needs more. A blue chip pitcher in his prime who can give a team 35 to 40 quality starts. Frankly Clemens is not worth that kind of money anymore.

He needs to retire from the game, not the game retire from him. And that my friend is just about to happen. Cooperstown awaits and I for one will be there to honor his incredible career.

I think at best its 50/50 he will pitch again.

He certainly it not over the hill, with that record 7-6 2.30era. It would be a lot less than 6 losses if he played for anyone but the Astros.

If he comes back, I think Boston. He started there, he will probably be in the Hall of Fame wearing a Sox cap, why not finish your career there? The fans love him, it fixes up the situation when he left, and they have a pretty good team, and some fine young arms.

He is not going to play just for the sake of playing, New York was good, but would he really go back? Sure he has some friends there, and some memories, why spoil that? The Rangers make no sense, and I think he is done with the Astros (his last game this year said that to me) And Petitte may not be back for the Astros, and unless they can get him back and get some bats, They are not going to the postseason and if Clemens comes back, I am sure he will want to play in October, or at least have the chance to.

The only team he has any type of unfinished business with is Boston.

Roger the Dodger is interested in only Roger. He is not a team player and does not deal with a full deck. Not known for his intelligence, Roger will keep people hanging while he decides. I love his statement that he hasn't decided to pitch for a full year or part of as year or at all. Just stay tuned as he stumbles and bumbles his way through one news conference after another contradicting himself in the same sentence. My hope is that he retires and spares the world of his idiocy!! If I never saw his face again on TV, it would still be too soon.

Chow!!!

I belive the "Rocket" should say good bye to baseball as far as being an active player, but the instruction as a pitching coach would be invaluable and he most probably could command a salary commensurate with what he is making now. The man has had an illustrious career and should leave while he is at the top. Thanks, Roger for all the great memories you have given baseball fans every where.

Well if lets say he came to pitch for the Dodgers, my team. he would first off eat up a alot of salary and we need another bat or to resign garciaparra badly! Plus I think our pitching is actually a strong point.

But overall he could still pitch and my guess he would stay in texas close to his family. The Rangers could use him if Houston is not interested.

My favorite team is the Yanks (here comes the thumbs down), but they have enough aging pitchers. It pains me to say this, but he should finish out his career where it started in Boston. They have enough young pitching where he would be great mentor to a lot of those guys.

the "Rocket" need to come to the yankees and mentor the young pitchers that will be coming up next year and to the person who says that he is go into the HOF as a Rex Sox is sadly wrong...he will go with the team that gave him the only rings that he has on his fingers

If the bum isn't willing to pitch a full season he should retire. He's a spoil azz,who wants to pitch for only 3 months

He has nothing to prove to anyone.
I wouldn't want him on the Yankees as a part time player. The Hall of Fame is waiting for him.
Retire already!
