I recently had RoadRunner installed in my new apartment. Today I purchased a router and hooked it up. The setup wizard provided gets to the router configuration step and tells me that my modem has router funtions, and that I need to disable them. I contacted RoadRunner who told me that wasn't true. Anyway, I was not able to set up my wireless network, but my laptop is finding an unsecure network that was not there before. If I unplug my router, the network disappears. The three other networks in range of my laptop begin with 2WIRE, but this new one begins with Jumpstart.
Did it set up a network by itself? If this Jumpstart network is mine, how can I secure it, and why is it named Jumpstart? I just want to use my laptop anywhere in my house without connecting it to the ethernet cable! Help

Sorry. It is a D-Link WBR 1310 (ver. A1) router. I can connect to the Jumpstart network,or with the ethernet cable (thru the router).

what you wont is call d-link and get the address for the firmware
and then you need to download the firmware up dates once you do that all you need is to set the wep or wpa on the Router and the SSID, then set the SSID and the wep or wpa in the network settings on your computer.

How do I enable WEP encryption on my WBR series router?

WEP is a good security measure to implement on your wireless network to keep intruders out. However, if your wireless adapter supports it WPA is a stronger form of encryption.

You can find information on configuring your WBR router for WPA-PSK here

Step 1: Open a web browser and type the IP address of the WBR series router into the address bar (default is http://192.168.0.1).

Step 2: The default username is admin (all lower case) and the default password is blank (nothing). Click on OK.

Step 3: Click on the Setup tab at the top and then click on Wireless Settings on the lefthand side.

We could help you so much better if you would provide details about the router and less about the roadrunner and such. I would need to know the manufacturer and model of router to help you. But when you unplug the router and the access point disappears its a pretty good sign that your router is broadcasting, as for securing it, again Id need to know make and model, as different routers have different configurations.

browse through your router cd for help and info files example pdf.

search for the web-based login to your router through the router's ip address. note the password needed to login to the router.

before login to the router, make sure the direct connection to the internet without connecting to the router but connected directly to the internet adls or cable modem is working.

then, connect back the router and connect the modem cable accordingly the right way.

login to the router through the internet explorer and through the router's ip address.

after that, set up the router through the internet explorer's router login page and test the internet by opening a new internet explorer windows and try go to http://www.yahoo.com

make sure you get ready the internet modem's info when setting up the router.

ps: once the internet is working, you can progress to check if the local network is working or not through the router.

cheers and good luck!
