A house I own has thick moss growing on the roof. What's the best way to get rid of it. I read scraping it off is not a good idea, and will damage the roof.

Try a 3 gallon garden sprayer, use bleach mixed strong with water. It will also clean your roof!

John K is absolutely correct. No cleaning solutions offered up are effective in preventing this growth from occurring and some are even poisonous and potentially destructive to your roof. Buy the zinc flashing and insert them under the first course of shingles beneath the ridge(assuming you have 3 tab shingles). Nature will do the rest. Thumbs up to John!

I have answered this question too many times without a correct answer. Please listen, do not use any solvents or chemicals on your roof. You need a zinc anode flashing installed near the peak of your roof. When rain gets the anode wet, zinc runs down your roof killing moss and mold/mildew. It will not harm your roof. Please check into this before picking some hardware store gimmick as your cure.
Good luck, Jack

Perhaps a wash of Muriatic acid and water with Chlorine may do it. I would say 30% muriatic acid and 30% chlorine.and 30% water. This should kill the moss. It grows on the north side.

Hi Kim,
Pour bleach directly on the moss let sit or dry then use power washer or hose attachment that should do the trick. Good luck & have a good day!

DO NOT EVER MIX CHLORINE BLEACH WITH MURIATIC ACID!!! That is what they used to execute prisoners condemned to death in the gas chamber.

Try pressure washing with bleach and TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) TSP is not available everywhere.

If it is really severe, you may need to re-shingle.

I would use salt. It is very effective at killing things.

Bleach it off, or pressure wash it off.
