Some people think they live like animals and must possess an animal intelligence, is this remotely the case?

Okay, Callie, ballistic, and Izzy all have 5 star answers so I don't know who to pick. Can't bring it to a vote or the voters will choose the lamest answer they can, or it'll be stuck as a tie for six months. Sorry if I don't pick you in advance.

Intelligence is a 'constant' that all people have, no matter what society or environment they live in. One of the most useful definitions of intelligence that relates to this questions outlines intelligence as how successfully an environment can be manipulated to someones' advantage.

IQ, a concept developed by Alfred Binet (1857-1911), expresses that intelligence can not be measured like height and that it is more complicated. Also we have to remember our actual intelligence (and cerebral composition) hasn't actually changed since the stone age.

People usually mistake technology with civilization. For any number of reasons, be it population size or food surplus, some societies have moved from a nomadic existence to an agriculture way of life. This seems to be one of the biggest changes (especially in technology due to pooling of resources) and has nothing to do with intelligence..One of the biggest factors in western culture of recent has been the 'industrial revolution'. However, the intelligence of the different societies and cultures remain the same, it is nature and their environment that push them into different directions.

Thanks for your time, hope you find this helpful.

Hi there,

Intelligence and civilization are both variables that are very abstract. Some people have more skills in a given task than others. That is what makes up this world a balanced one. No people is better than any other because we all are good at something.

These should never be compared with culture (this is what I understand when you say "Some people think they live like animals..."). Culture is abstract as it has many factors to define it. Factors of course are mainly geographic, political, economical and religious. No culture is better than any other because in this case all of them have different rates regarding its growth, adaptation, changes and practice.

Hope that clears something.

Civilized and intelligence are two separate things. If we were to put ourselves in their place, would we be able to survive the way they do? We may be able to survive, but not as well as they can. They are adept to their surroundings and way of life there, just as we are here. That does not make them unintelligent or uncivilized. Some of the things we do, they may call uncivilized. Have you ever seen a documentary on the way these people live? The way they come up with things to survive or how they can build themselves a place to live in, can not be called unintelligent. Can it? I have met many people who are both unintelligent and uncivilized right here in my own neighborhood! It's best not define people in such a way just because they live in a climate that makes clothing unnecessary or the fact that hunting and gathering are a means of survival and life.

It depends on what you consider intelligence. Intellect certainly is a given- "civilized" people like us are much more intellectual. However, they would posess knowledge that is more useful to their lives that we don't have.

I guess it all sort of equals out.

I'd have to say that animal intellligence is a definite survival tool that could be implemented in everyday life. But I bet that those who live nude tend to get Poison Ivy in the most uncomfortable places.

Every civilization has their own level of intelligence. Hitler was supposedly very intelligent, but look what he did to the Jews. Who was the animal there?

Quite probably, they will have the same intelligence and natural skills. (Unless they're affected by something in their environment)

What does increase with access to technology and science and stuff, is you knowledge level.
