It is NOT one of the ten commandments.

It is not specifically mentioned in the bible anywhere that I can find it.

Christians can only purport that masturbation is a sin based on the principal of abusing/misusing sex that God designed in a manner other than God intended.

It often can lead to thoughts of impurity. Fantasizing being sexually entwined with someone you aren't married to. Perhaps even with someone who is married to another. That would be an adulterous thought.
In the absence of direct statement referring to masturbation the only "sin" woud be one of selfish indulgence. Or degrading the body which is considered to be the image of God or the temple of the Holy Spirit.

We do know that with men, masturbation usually ends with some sperm being wasted, thrown away. There is mention in the bible of a man being punished for marrying his dead brothers wife (which was the custom) but he cast his seed on the ground rather than have people think the baby was his brothers baby. He disobeyed his earthly fathers wish to raise children to the dead son and God was very angry with this man. But it is not clear if the anger was over disobeying the father or for casting his seed on the ground.

Go figure.

Most doctors and therapists will agree, men who masturbate frequently before marriage may have difficulty being a good lover to the wife because they have developed a habit that did not include another human.
Take that for what it's worth.

I think Deena gave a pretty explicit explanation of why it is Considered a sin.. :)
Good preaching, girl...
So everything that doesnt lead to precreating is a sin.. hmmm.. and all the love that same-sex couples feel for each other is.. and all the beauty that they see in each other.. should all be put away like trash so that it all could be 'right'?... Better live a miserable life with the 'right sex' and do It the 'right way' and have 'godly children' than be happy and enjoy the life that we have been given?...
You guys Kill.. destroy more than anything else does..You do not 'set free' as you claim.. you bring misery..
Report me if you wish (for offending poor Christian lambs) - I dont want to have preachers in this section!

Sex was created as a gift to married couples to bond them in intimacy and to possibly create a child withing their marriage that the child can be raised in.

So that is why masturbating, artificial birth control (a type of mutual masturbating), same sex sexual experiences, abortion, premarital sex. Looking at porn, even if it's to ejaculate into a cup to bring to the doctors is a sin.

Every act of sex that by type or by artificial means is impossible to create new life within holy matrimony, is sinful.

So Don't masturbate - It is a sin.

Hey, It's God's way or the Highway.

God Bless You, ;-)

A couple of hundred years ago the church scholars though that men had only a limited amount of seamen and that masturbation was a waste of the gift from god. Wasting a gift from god was a sin, hence it became illegal. They also made gay sex, sex with animals and sexual relations outside the marriage illegal partly based on the same reasoning. There was a death penalty for those crimes. (That also depended on how much power the church had in the area of course.)

The whole thing started with the story of Onan in the bible. In Catholocism masterbation is called the " sin of Onan' or "Onanisn"
Onan married his brothers widow and withdrew at the last moment " spilling his seed upon the earth" God Killed him ( i think it was with lightning)
This has resulted in a common misinterpertation , Onans duty was to father a child of the same bloodline as his brother to inherit his brother's lands and goods and provide for the widowed mother in her old age. Onan didn't want to do so , so "spilled his seed upon the earth" therefore cheating the widow of inheritance and support in her old age. His sin wasn't masturbating, it was cheating a widow. and God has stated that " those who cheat widows and orphans will be destroyed, and their children will be orphaned"

Actually, it isn't.

In the Bible, in the story of Onan, people often mistake the act of masturbation as a sin because of this. God actually told Onan to impregnate the queen. Onan had refused because she was still married to the king and it was a sin to commit adultery. So, Onan had "Spilt his seed". The real sin was not "spilling his seed", but it was not impregnating the queen.

that's why what ever sin you commit that's between you and God and your judgment of right and incorrect. He is familiar with we've human desires and weaknesses. He is familiar with what's in our hearts, Is it lewd, or an particularly accountable feeling for no longer repressing our ideas. He supplies us the alternative to no longer provide in to our desires or needs.. He supplies us prayer to invite for power to no longer do it. yet he's familiar with once you fail or while the physique takes over what you are attempting to combat. there is not any contradiction, to the BIble, yet there are various interior ourselves. we'd like it to bypass the way we'd like it., in any different case the Bible ought to be incorrect.

Most religions are patriarchal. They enforce male power.

Masturbation undermines male power because women who do it, realize that sex can be enjoyable, increasing the chance that they will look for satisfying sex, even if they have to go outside the marriage.

If a man admits that he masturbates, his wife would feel less duty-bound to satisfy his "god-given" cravings for sex because his hand is perfectly functional (though admittedly not as fun).

I really have no idea. I think that somewhere in the bible it even says that your own hand is better than to go out and do a sexual sin.

It is using the gift of sex outside of the way it was intended to be used.

Sin causes Spiritual Blindness.
