I admire you for taking interest in making your own skin care product. It's not that difficult and the ingredients are so easy to find on the internet or a local health food store.
It's like cooking your own food, you know exactly what goes into it. NO preservatives, artificial ingredients (synthetic chemicals) or the worst- fragrance.
If you want to scent your creams/lotions, use essential oils. Not only do you get a wonderful, natural scent, but therapeutic values, too. Fragrance oils are cheap immitations and full of bad stuff for the body. It IS absorbed thru the skin, ya know.

Do your homework- plenty of info on the web. Essential oils need to be used with caution. Even though they are natural plant substances, they are concentrated and must be diluted before applying to the skin. Make small batches. Sanitize your work area and everything you use to make your products.
And remember, if you don't add water to your product, chances are very slim of bacteria growing. So, stick to the balms and butters. It's safer and easy. Lotions are diluted with water and need a preservative for shelf life, unless you use it and don't plan on storing it for months.
Find a good recipe/formula and try it. Ingredients used for whipped body butters are shea butter, cocoa butter and light oils, etc. Once you make your own you will think twice about using the commercial products. Read the labels on skin care products just like you do with food labels.
