i learned, way back in fifth grade, that classical music is best to listen to when you want to retain information and rock music is supposed to have the exact opposite affect.
i learned in college psychology that your sense of hearing can affect your other senses. the louder the music the lower your ability to see or focus on something you are looking for.

Music that has words is very distracting to most people. You find yourself singing along or listening to the words instead of concentrating on the task at hand. Loud, head-banging music is the worst, by far, as it fills your ears and mind with sounds that cannot be ignored. Mellow sounds, like classical compositions or chanting are the best types of music to play if you want to keep your concentrating. They have a lulling effect on the mind and allow you to do your job.

A persons chosen musical preference will most likely relax them, or put their mind at ease. Concentration is best when these two factors are met. If you like classical or country...Don't try to listen to metal or rap while studying. Some can think clearer when loud music is present, while others are best in silence.
