Investigate the biologists that formulated the cell theory..... what were the previous theories of how organisms were made? Why did it take to the mid 19th century for the cell theory to be formulated? What advances in equipment and more important, in the nature of the world (atoms are real, spontaneous generation was disproven, periodic table formed).... etc..... all play into the cell theory.
