Worms don't really have much in the way of a brain or nervous system, so I doubt they mind. As far as other animals, I used to be against it but I've become rather desensitized to it... Many more animals are killed to become food or fur, or killed for sport... I have to deal with killing mice on a regular basis to feed snakes... They are low on the food chain for a reason. A few humanely euthanized rats here and there for students to learn is a small price to pay. As a bio student, there really is no replacement for learning first hand on the real thing. My favorite dissection was a fetal pig in high school... Very interesting. The only time I took offense was a mink dissection, and that is because the school was actually getting the minks from fur farms and paying for them, so our experiments were fueling the fur trade...

Get real, worms are not animals. They're basic organisms. Are you gonna argue next that we can't cut the flatworms down the middle to see how they grow two heads because that's cruel? Even the cats that classes disect are animals that were already euthanized and donated by organizations like the animal shelters. And somebody mentioned PETA? PETA kills several times more common pets every month than the local SPCA. Don't trust them.
However, back to the topic at hand, I personally wouldn't want to disect a cat or other pet-like animal, but can understand their importance in instructing biology.

Some of the kindest people I know are stoners. I do know a lot of stoners who are just punks though. It's like there are two basic types of people who smoke weed. 1.Stupid punks who smoke weed to be "cool" and do things they shouldn't. Usually found in the form of young men or teenage boys. These are the people who just care about getting messed up like being high, getting drunk or popping pills. From my experience I believe these are the people who are at risk of trying hard drugs, or spending all their money on weed or other drugs, and they are likely more likely to get arrested or in a serious accident. These people's lives are usually debilitated by using marijuana and they get into trouble. 2. The mature people who use weed therapeutically or because they appreciate how it relaxes and opens your mind. These people are typically very nice and usually value a few hippie ideals. Most of the people I know in this category would never touch alcohol, tobacco, or any substance that is unsafe or unnatural. They believe weed is good for the soul and they embrace peace, spiritualism, love and nature. However they never fail to keep safety and responsibility in mind. They accept people's differences and really care about humanity. These people's lives are helped by marijuana and they can live normal, everyday lives. Honestly it sounds like this kid may fit category 1 so your friend should be careful and use good judgement. Just remember that smoking weed does not necessarily mean a person is bad but it can. Category 1 are the baddies and the creeps. Category 2 people are awesome and you should be friends with them even if you don't smoke weed because they are fun, happy people.

I've dissected two worms, one frog, one crayfish, a rat, and a sheep's heart...they were already dead when I got them...so might as well dig in and cut them up. If I didn't they'd still be dead in the first place.
Is it cruel? Only if they suffer when they die, which is usually not the case. Most people just think..."eww" but you do learn a great deal once you get over that sillyness. It may not be the most ethical of practices...but it does serve a purpose. People dissect humans, too...it's called an autopsy and that perform that on everyone that dies...it's required.

Interesting. I've heard of worms & frogs being dissected, but not birds. However, I've eaten plenty of birds in the form of chickens, ducks, and turkeys over the years so I'm not too worried about them. The frogs are farm-raised, so there's no danger of them going extinct. There are more worms on the planet than there are people, so there's no worries about worm population either.
Don't fret about the rights of the worms & frogs, unless you want to make a fool out of yourself being a patsy for PITA. They're dead already, and it's their job to be dissected. Dissect them, learn about biology, and from that earn a chance to make better money in the long run.
Besides, any student who doesn't know how to spell "apart" or comprehend the difference between "there" and "their" is in serious need of education. Study hard.

A worm in an invertibrate animal.

Ok, as for animal rights and dissection. If you banned all dissection then you might as well ban surgeons because they would never be able to get the understanding of phsiology needed to perform surgery.
The dissection in school is so that kids can get an understanding of biology and anatomy. This education will be the foundation of the knowledge that doctors will need. Also, it is not a bad idea to have an idea of how your body is assembled and how it works. You cannot fully understand that from diagrams. I see no problem with kids doing dissections in high school. I would not give my kid permission to skip it.

Ew. gross. I think it's ok to cut open worms, but not frogs, cats, and other animals. I think it's gross and creul to dissect an animal. There are alternitives to it. If a kid doesn't want to dissect becuase they get sick, they shouldn't have to and should NOT be forced to. I am the kind of person who will puke if I see animal guts. It is nevver right to foce students to dissect animals.

Sweetheart - that's life. Sorry that you are sensitive to it. Just a point of reference are you Vegan(nothing against it)? If you feel this strongly about a worm you should look into it.....

i was not aware that a worm qualified as an animal. however, i do not think that it is wrong. i think that the little buggers are over populated and disgusting. you may as well do something with them. if you dont cut it open to learn something, someone else will spear it through the middle and use it as fishing bait.

It is not good, bad or neither, it is necessary if the knowledge is to advance. I can not see how you were forced. If you believe strongly enough, you stand up for your beliefs. When you do that you will have my respect, if not my agreement.
