G'day,
As some previous answers indicates, you did not specify the configuration of your laptop or how old it is. As you may aware that older hardware configuration may not be suitable for newer programs or operating systems.
Some earlier answers are spot on. You will need to check for:
1. Startup programs. You can see it from the Start-Programs-Startup menu bar, or the bottom right-hand side of your display (next to the computer clock) which usually displays the programs running in the background. Try to minimise the number of running programs there.
2. Uninstall unnecessary softwares. The more full your HDD, the slower it runs.
3. Run disk defragmenter
4. Run virus and spyware scans
If you have done these basic steps and not much of improvements, then the most extreme way will be to format your HDD and reinstall your operating system and programs again. This will make sure that there will be no hidden operating system bugs, virus or spyware in your system and everything is installed fresh, just like when you purchase your laptop on the first day. If you decided to take this option, MAKE SURE you have backed-up your data files and e-mails (if exist) since it will erase EVERYTHING from your hard disk. Also make sure that you have the Operating System and drivers CD ready so you can reinstall everything again.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Check for spyware. Spyware will make it run really slow.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
Try this scan, its free, it removes
I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Give it to Jamaica's Asafa Powell, he runs 100 meter in 9.77 seconds.
Any way it was joke.
What is the operating system of your laptop and what is the configuration ? It is not possible to answer without these two info.

Go to my computer, right click on local disk, select properties then click on disk cleanup. Careful that you do not delete some vital files, though

Define "slow"
If you are worried about it, have it checked out. Otherwise, you're just going to have to live with it.
