First make sure your hair is parted (in a not-so-perfect way). Grab your hair by pulling into a low pony and manuever it to the middle of your head. It may take a couple of tries, but get used to not flattening out any bumps (hence the messiness.) This should look hot, but you can even go so far as to separate sections of the front of your hair. Using bobby pins, secure these pieces to the rest of the bun, making sure to twist each section.

Pull your hair back leaving about a 1/4" in the front near the part. When you put your hair in the bun, pull in to a half pony but let the part where the hair normally sitck out be on top. Pull the half pony apart and pin. Split the extra hair to allow half on both side and pin. Pin the hair in the front in places in the back. Keep the part and leave a few strands down to give a wisp look. To punk it up you can add a couple of scarves. Tie a 1/4 to 1/2 from the front, but keep the rest the same.

you can put it into a ponytail and the last time you pull it through you leave the ends in the ponytail and not pull them all the way through. true messy buns take more time and effort than the clean real deal...when putting your hair up, don't do the top perfectly, scruntch it a bit to create the messy look
