I have heard Hugh Laurie in his natural British/English accent, then for House he goes American. My husband is British and he can't do an American accent without great difficulty. Like I can fake a Brit accent, but he can't an American. I know Hugh Laurie has had acting and speech but that would be difficult. Can others with accents just go into an American accent?

Not only is Hugh Laurie a very good and practised actor but you have raised a good point. A British accent is a very distinct accent with certain syllables getting a bit different tone or sound. American accents are less....refined. We get our accents from a melting pot of languges and when some non american tries to imiatate the "accent" they dont know how to put pressure on each syllable since our accents vary so much within America and withen each State and County.

So to anwser your question, you could go into an "American" accent if they had a bit of practice or speech training.
Hugh Laurie, as an actor went through speech and acting training to be able to have an accent. I personally detect a non american accent in Hugh Lauries voice. His british accent still is found in his acting accent.

I agree, Hugh Laurie is really gifted... not everyone can pull off a *convincing* foreing accent!! Perhaps he's been switching on and off for such a long time that he's gotten really good at it... I wonder if he slips sometimes and says British expressions while filming??

----- Do you remember James Marsters, who played Spike in the series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"?? He's actually from California, yet he'd do the best fake English accent ever in that show!! [At first most people on the set actually thought he really *was* British...]

Anyway I'm Canadian, but I gotta say my Aussie accent is pretty funny LOL.... but English is not my 1st language so I got this little hint of a French accent no matter what I do ;)

He's a genius. He went to Cambridge with Emma Thompson. Acting is his passion and his life-work. It's his job to be able to do that.
I bet he could slip into an Italian, Scottish, or Arabic accent just as easily.

sure, why not? i bet if you listened to british people talk and tried to imitate them long enough, you'd be able to talk just like them. hugh laurie is good at it because he's an actor and he practiced a whole bunch.

According to him they choose his words carefully. He says that he has no problems with the medical terms but they have to keep his dialogue down so that he doesn't fall into his natural accent.

I saw him on TV talking about that. He has to work hard & says every single word is pronounced differently! He sure does a good job. I have heard a Russian and Mexican person speak with no problem-but think that it depends on how good their "ear" is!

Most actors that have an accesnt can turn it off. Colin Farrell is a great example.

He's a great actor. He's said it is very difficult for him and has to work at it all the time.

If the chick is white, then yea, that might be a little weird. Edit: Nah, those knees look fine.
