Well, I'm not sure how unique this is, but it's kinda unique to my family.

My family's all Lutheran(mostly devout, although my mother's more relaxed than most everyone else) and I'm an atheist. They don't know and I don't want to make a fuss about it, let alone at Thanksgiving. But I don't want to feel forced to endure a prayer, either, especially in my own home.

Frankly, if I'm at someone else's home, I don't worry about it. They wanna pray, that's their business, but I'm a little less comfortable with praying to a God I don't believe in in my own home, which is a bit problematic to a point. So what I devised is a plan to let the rest of my family pray without obviously encroaching on my non-belief in my own home.

What I generally do is when we sit down for eating, rather than offering a prayer, I tend to go around the table and have everyone say what they're grateful for this year. It's not a "thanks be to God" sort of thing, no religion involved. Just what everyone's grateful for, be it having their health, that their sports team won the penant, whatever.

Nobody's offended and I can have a religion-free meal and my family can pray individually afterwards if they want. And really, saying what we're thankful for means more to me at Thanksgiving than praying does. After all, that's the whole point of the holiday besides porking out on turkey and stuffing and falling asleep to football afterwards. Remembering what we're grateful for, remembering what we're lucky to have and remembering those who might not be as lucky as us.

Other than that, which is my doing in my own home, obviously doesn't apply to the rest of the family and I don't mind anyways, we have a pretty stereotypical Thanksgiving. Up at dawn to get the bird on, usual meal, usual overeating and leftovers, usual parades and football afterwards. But considering my stark difference to my devout family, it's unique to me to remember what we're thankful for rather than praying when that's what the rest of my family does.

Watching the Friends Thanksgiving Day Episodes!!!! They're hilarious and all ten of them are on at some point around the holiday!!

Other than the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special, it's all that's on and festive besides the Parade and It's a Wonderful Life.

Well my son has stuffed the turkey for the last 3 yrs. We get up super early for him to do it. He is 8 now. I likes doing it. My husband cooks and I take care of the appetizers.

We go around the table, each of us saying what we are grateful for since our last gathering. We add special prayers for those that have died, and any among us who are needing extra help. After dinner, we all go for a walk to appreciate our time together.

Dear [NAME],

I just wanted you to know that I really appreciate the extra effort you made to cover for me during my period of absence.
I know that you already have a full workload, and I am well aware of the additional demands of my work.
Your efforts will not be forgotten.

I hope to be in a position to reciprocate when needed.
Thanks again.

Sincerely,
