When Schliemann found the ruins of the city of Troy he gave the opportunity to archeologists to finally understand if Homer had invented everything or not.
About 7 different layers of ruins have been found to date: the city was distroyed and rebuilt several times, indicating that it was rich and in a great tactical position. It was distroyed once (or twice) by an earthquake, and a couple of times by human hands (meaning wars).
A coalition of Greek cities attacked the city of Troy and destroyed it, although it did not take them 10 years to do so, and the reason was NOT Helen. The reason was economically, as every war that has been waged by human kind.
Achilles was not immortal and the walls of the city weren't built by Poseidon and Ades, but the rest is true, cope with it.

Troy existed at a point that would have effectively controlled access to the Black Sea. The Greeks were a trading people, and wanted access to the Black Sea. There are eminently possible geopolitical reasons for a war between the Greeks and the Trojans in Archaic times.
The site of Troy has been discovered, and many of the layers of the city were destroyed by fire.
Put those two facts together and a war between the Greeks and the Trojans is quite likely.
How many ships were involved, whether the war lasted 10 years and whether it was ended by the stratagem of a wooden horse is unknowable, but unlikely. That Achilles was invulnerable except for his heel or the Gods were involved and took sides are highly unlikely.

Greek culture at that time carried lessons in stories called Epics. The Trojan War is probably based on a war but events are not true for the time. Wars in those days consisted of one or two armed conflicts. A ten year stiege of a city would have been too expensive for any ruler of a city-state. Also the direct involvement of Gods. Oddly enough the story lays the ground work for another great epic called Illiad based on a soliders return home journey. The story is probably retold to convey the importance of not letting your gard down to your eneimies, being creative with the circumstances you have, and how greed and perspetion can cloud judgement.

well war for ten yrs is pretty ridiculous but it has happened before look at vietnam. Though according to the book the illiad by homer, which chronicles the trojan war the warriors had assistance from god's, now that is highly unlikely. And lastly the war supposedly started with Helen being given to the prince of troy as a gift from aphrodite, this of course isn't true because she doesn't exist. Therefore the whole cause for war would have to be false. Is it likely that a war happened there, sure, but that war? prolly not.

Have you read The Iliad? Homer intended it to be taken as a story of fiction. The conflict is whether there was a Trojan conflict and whether the Empire Troy ever existed. I think it might be easier to write on what Archaeological finds there are to support Troy was real. Agamemnon, and Achilles might not have existed, but maybe other heros that were the basis of these characters.

Why dont you think the war happened? I saw the movie troy by the way,, good movie. Many recordings were found, physical evidence was found, a struggle between the two empires probablly led to the Trojan War. There are even legends based on the war. Its obvious that SOME war happened. I suggest you revise your paper.

Ask: Did the war happen, or not?
Ask: Is the glass half full or half empty?
Your school report is to write your thoughts on the subject and try to support them with as much facts as you can. Do the research in the direction you want to go, and you'll ignore the crossroads that may lead to other ways of thinking.
Look at this link, as it may help you along your road.
Though it is good to always wonder and always question, some times one needs to take a commitment of idea and go with it full speed ahead.
Good luck with your paper.
