Are these the same?

Question

I was looking through Netflix, and I found a series (of what I think is) movies named Lain. And I knew about this anime series called Serial Experiment(s) Lain (not sure if Experiment was plural or not in the name). I have wanted to see the series. So here is my question:

Are these two related (same characters, storyline, you know), are the movies the actual anime series (not just movies based off the anime), and if it is, does it take place after the series (do I need to see the series before I watch the movies)?

Same thing, name just shortened
its an anime series シリアルエクスペリメンツレイン ( Serial Experiments Lain) I don't think there are movies of this series.
