It has everything to do with perception I think. People are firstly visual - remember first impression lasts?! And our visual senses tend to organize things and group them to alike and dislikes based on experience. For example if you see people wearing dark clothes with matching fishnets and dark make-up you term them as gothic right? It has something to do with what the other person is projecting also. Most people express their personality through the way they carry themselves generally and that is more or less through material means ( the way they dress, etc).

This type of thinking usually comes from how people are raised.
Even the bible makes the quote "showy display of ones means of life" The media bombards us with how beautiful a person is or how rich they are. Isn't it funny how the second thing (after asking your name) a person asks you is "what do you do"
We need to all learn to look at people for who they are and how kind their heart is.

It is people that are insecure about who they are. People who are looking for something, they just don't know what that something is and they think material things will satisfy that need but there is only one thing that can satisfy that need -- that need is satisfied by your relationship with GOD. You may think this is a dorky answer but you know or you will know deep down that this is the anwer. I expect to get some feedback on this but again, the feedback will be from those people you are inquiring about.

because places like hollister and A&F wont hire people unless they look like a person that is the "perfect" body image. The only way they hire people is from recruitment...they see you in their stores and think your theire "type" and then they ask you if you want an application. If you turn in a application they dont even look at it unless they think your the look they want. Trust me... my friend was a manager there. eww. who do they think they are? sorry... i have a big grudge. nothing personal

Youth - only teens. Once you reach a certain age, you get things for yourself, not to impress others.

From ignorant kids who don't have identities yet...so that's the way they define other people and also themselves.
