I live in a university residence building (apartment-style). There is a tree outside my apartment, approximately four meters from the wall of my building. I would like to hang an inexpensive bird feeder in the tree. In my old apartment (not school-owned) we were not allowed to hang bird feeders on our balconies because they apparently attracted rats. Do you think it would be safe to hang a feeder in a tree four meters from my building?

[I refuse to ask the residence services staff, because we don't get along (we got in a fight when I moved in and found love letters and spilled alcohol inside my supposedly clean apartment, then again when they accidentally gave the keys to my storage locker to another student who then went through all of my stored belongings).]

My primary concern is attracting rodents or other unwanted pests to the building.

The shell from the seeds that the birds have eaten is probably what attracted the rats. Sunflower seed shells attract rats. If the seed shells are left on the ground the rodents will come. This happened to me in my yard. Luckily they never made it into the house and the traps took care of them. A great alternative would be a suet feeder. Suet is beef fat that is usually loaded with seeds and or fruit. Suet is also a great choice for winter because of the high fat concentration in it. The birds need the extra fat in the winter to help keep themselves warm. The suet is also usually eaten completely and there is no mess left on the ground. Suet can be found at Wal-Mart in the pet section and you will also need a suet feeder. A suet feeder is a cage that the suet sets in and you hang the thing from the tree. Make sure to buy a cage that is vinyl or plastic coated. Some suet feeders are bare metal and when the metal gets cold the bird could be injured, especially it's eye if it bumps the metal. It's like having your fingers sticking to metal in the cold, the bird could lose an eye, but this is avoidable with the coating on the feeder. Suet will attract a good variety of birds for you to watch, especially woodpeckers. Just give them a little time to find the feeder and they will visit all the time. Good Luck!!!

rats????? eww. it would be safe, but keep your windows closed =) but believe it or not, birds have several feeding sites they visit throught the day, what they have a difficult time finding is clean water. if you can only put up one item then put up a bird bath instead of a bird feeder. and you could that on your balcony and it will not attract rats.

It's fine but clean up the seeds & bird droppings which will happen. Make sure the bird feeder is not easy to see.
