We had a bizarre surprise tonight - a good-sized toad was inside our toilet just under the rim. I'm just wondering if there was a way he might have come in through the plumbing, or if he must have found some other route. I don't know much about plumbing so I don't know what's possible. In case it is relevant ... we have a septic system. Anyone know?!?

By the way... the kids are trying to talk us into keeping the toad for a pet, in which case it will be named "John." And the next time someone goes in the toilet it will be referred to as "toad stool." And since it was in the potty, our son is very interested in trying to get his sister, the princess-fanatic, to kiss the toad.

Actually, Neil, based on where we found it I would guess that it is a Spring Peeper!

I hope you're not talking about a POISONOUS cane toad. Your septic tank might be pretty full and there are 'air' pockets in the pipes, I guess it is possible.

There is no possible way for this to happen. You are speaking about a sewer pipe. While they are usually 4" wide all the way to the street, and the pipe is not full of water all of the time, it is very unusual for anything to be living in the MAIN sewer other than rats. Even if they did crawl up your drain pipe, they would then have to "swim" through the traps, which are tight bends in the pipes immediately after the fixtures, which are full of water--the water prevents gases from the sewer from entering your house.

Sounds like the makings of a great story. I give you credit for originality at least.

Strictly speaking the toad did not come from outside, through the sewage plumbing to surface in your toilet. It would have drown. Even Frogs can drown.

I suggest you keep it, at least until it decides to return from whence it came. Thank you for not naming it "Brownie"

We found a frog on our toilet seat once........not as an elaborate story as yours. Ours slipped in the door when we let the dog outside.

Frogs camp outside of doors with lights to catch their bug supper. If you aren't careful they will be attached to the door and hop off in the house when you open the door.

Sounds like it was a good possibility in your case..........and no, there was no thought to keeping it as a pet.
