How about Sunset Crater National Monument in Arizona. Since the clue also mentioned "sleep" I thought about the sun going down.

There is a BLM site in Utah called the West Desert Sinkhole
which is a large hole in the ground found in 1927.
The link I am giving tells bout it and how to get there.
If this is not the place you are thinking of, try searching
"sinkholes". There seem to be several other sinkholes in the west.
Hope this helps you.
Cheers!
