While it looks nicer than just print writing, cursive is slowly becoming like Latin - a dead thing of the past. When I was learning to read and write (and I'm only 34), we had to learn cursive as a matter of course. Nowadays, almost no schools enforce this method of writing (along with making sure children are intelligent) so it's not likely to be around much longer (along with the idea of smart kids). And yes, I know it sounds like I have a problem with schools these days - and I do - because they do not have the resources to keep children in school and learning the way they used to.

I think the "making your child write in cursive only" died out around the same time as the "making your child write with their right hand only" as a matter of principle. I know my mother didn't write in cursive as much as my grandmother's generation. Everyone I know that is my grandmother's age or older writes in cursive only. Everyone that I know that is my mother's age is imbetween, and everyone I know my age writes in print. I think it was a shift in teaching styles. I remember a cartoon from the 40's or 50's depicting kids learning math just reciting all together over and over the times table. I certainly didn't learn math that way!

I also print more than use cursive. I think with so much being done on the computer, cursive may be a dying art.

Yeah pretty much. Once I got through 4th grade, I never was forced to use cursive anymore. So aside from my signature, my cursive is about the equivalent to a fourth grader's cursive. And I'm in college now... Most people aren't quite that bad, but people don't use it near as much as they used to.

I do too, I can read my writing better that way. When I do cursive writing, I tend to rush into the writing and end up with chicken scratch.

My husband and I both print all the time. I think print is easier for people to read and I enjoy writing that way a lot better.

Yeah. And sadly, more people actually type than write nowadays. Whether it's an email at a computer or off their text messaging cell phone.
