If women wish to cover themselves, that is fine. However, they shouldn't be forced to, and support agencies for women who are threatened by their family/spouse are essential, both for Western and immigrant women.
PS I am Canadian, not American.

Thank God I am an American woman. I don't agree with the covering of the face because a woman should always show the beauty of her face and let her smile be the sunshine of someones' day. If you cover the face you might as well not show anything, not even a finger. Marrying more than one woman is definitely out of the question with me because I don't share.

In America its not a good thing to wear a veil. Veil are seen as a mask--not good particularly if going into a bank. Americans prefer to see the total person they are dealing with--not only a small visible part. The question becomes what are you concealing. Suggest best to become part of the society rather than stand apart from it. Also applies to language.

Societies limit the activities of women with dress codes. There are things you can't do wearings a Vail, or that are uncomfortable to do. The same can be said for long dresses , high heels and nylons, but western women only wear these part of the time. Because I believe that women should be free I am unwilling to tell someone they can't wear what they want, but it bothers me that women are willing to give up their freedom to participate in some activities to conform to a dress code.

I believe this tradition will not be popular in the United States.
This country, like most, was formed by the gun. The winners in this case were fighting so no citizen would ever have to humble themselves or show submissiveness to anybody. We are all equal.
The symbol of the veil shows women to be less than equal.

The general consensus in the U.S. is that a woman is free to take the veil if she wants to -- but most American women would drop a man like a bad habit if he insisted that she did.
Where I live (south Texas) one does see women veiled from time to time; we have a significant Muslim population here. No one thinks twice about women going veiled unless they hear men trumpeting the virtues of it with too much enthusiasm.

"American women do not cover themselves out of their fear of their men"? Where did you get that nonsense? American women don't cover themselves with medieval rags because we belong to ourselves and are not property like a donkey. There are parts of the world that REALLY need to drag themselves out of the 10th century. That is my opinion from America.

U.S.=free country when it comes to what you want to wear. If you want to cover yourself up, go right ahead! If not, that's fine with us! If you walk into a bank with a mask on your fine as long as you mean no harm and don't have a weapon. If the police are looking for someone who is wanted they ask you to momentarily take off the veil but then when they see you are not the culprit, you are free to go! Free to go on with your life...=)
Hope this helps. =)

I don't cover out of fear. I like knowing I look good and that it drives strange men absolutely nuts trying to figure out what figure I have. They go nuts when you hide what they have no right to see. Who are we to tell the how to dress? If a woman wants to cover herself here in the US, then let her. She doesn't need to wear daisy dukes and a sports bra to fit in.

I'm not sure they cover themselves out of fear of their husbands in most places. Its a sign of modesty, I don't have a problem with it. I think the Europeans are once again putting style before substance.
Their problem is that their citizens don't have to work so they've had to import vast numbers of non-citizens to actually do the work and wind up as second class citizens. Now they have droves of unemployed youths looking for something to do, and they will find something.
