hey anyone know of any popular sayings or phrases that mean something good came from something bad, like trash to treasure. i am doing a play reveiw based on a performance which was excellent yet it took place in sort of a rundown theatre. i have a bit of a writer's block at the moment, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot.

Hmmmm.....

Isn't there one about a "silk purse from a cow's ear?"

"all dressed up but no place to show" might work for you.

"sheep in a wolfs clothing"

If it grew to become into undesirable then the word "you are able to no longer make a silk handbag from a sow's ear" is a competent one. yet another is approximately how the toughest substance in the international is created under great rigidity- diamonds. What would not kill us makes us greater advantageous. in case you like to pass religious- do no longer pray for God to make your load much less, pray for God to make you greater advantageous. The performers further mild right into a dismal place.

Why use a metaphor? Why not just say the reality of it, that despite a less than ideal venue, the play was great. then go on to tell just how you thought it was great. Maybe express the wish that such a talented group could have more resources....

Just my 2 cents woth

How about working in some variation of
cloud with a silver lining...
or
the prize in a cracker jack box...
I think either one could be creatively adapted in your own writing style to fit this situation.
