They are two groups of people who have different ideas about how things should be done in the country, tell her that the idea of democracy is that the people get to decide which veiws they relate with. further explain to her that it is bad to become closedminded in ones following of a politcal party.

Unless your daughter has an exceptional IQ and can absorb several hundred years of history at her age, any answer you get will be biased or misinformed, because she probably won't have references to challenge what others claim. One large problem is that political parties change over time. So while parties may be defined by their present majority held beliefs, the fact of no absolute constant makes it impossible to have a standard, settled definition of what a party believes and represents.

Liberalism of 100 years ago is going to be different today, as would be conservatism, and the same inherent rule applies to the Democrats and Republicans. There can be enough differences and changes of opinion that one party becomes like the other, as it is now or as it was whenever.

They are in cahoots, both have swapped positions. They have excellent positions but have resorted to extremes.

A lot of blacks in the 1940s used to be Republicans. The Republicans used to question why poor and rich continued to receive subsidies. They only help the affluent and they get better help.

The Democrats get people addicted to Aid to Families with Dependent Children,A.F.D.C.,but known as 'Welfare" with no helps on getting educated to get a job.

Consider the individual and not affiliation. The Presidential Line-Item veto is opposed by both and supported when they can exploit it. Dubya would had used it to veto pork-barrel projects of his own party.

Study US history by Henry Steel Commager. It is a close to unbiased that you will find. He was a libertarian.

Consider becoming a Libertarian like Barry M Goldwater and Kelley Ross.

I do my best in giving well thought responses. Some of them are not well received. I am a human being.

Just tell her in a way she understands what Republican views are and what Democratic views are.

Here is an idea, but bring it down to her level: Republicans believe in absolutes (right and wrong) while Democrats believe in circumstances (shades of gray).

You can tell her that the difference between them is that Democrats tend to try to change things as time goes by, they are continually trying to move on (often with bad results), and Republicans try to generally keep things going the way they are if they're working. That is the basic breakdown between the two parties. Also that Democrats tend to be the party of the city people (big government promoters) and Republicans tend to be the party of the blue collar people (small government supporters), though they seem to be moving away from that, unfortunantly.

Republicans believe in self-help. This is where people go to work everyday to provide more jobs and a better life for themselves and those less fortunate in their community.

Democrats believe in the social program, where those less fortunate will be helped by those who go to work each day, which will provide a better life for themselves and those in their community.

Since we pay taxes regardless of who is in office, the social program is true for both parties. Dems use this feature much more than Reps.

Overall, both parties have a different approach/strategy, but their goal is the same.

To provide a better life for its society.

Since your daughter is only 9, you'll have to improvise this answer.

Just tell her that they are the two major political groups in the US, and the people in each group each have different ideas on the best way to run the country.

Then refer her to wikipedia or some other source if she wants to know more details.

Rebuplicans believe that the government should be smaller and do less for people. This is good because then people pay fewer taxes and have more freedom to do what they want with their lives. This is bad because the government pays for fewer things for us, like art classes in school, and healthcare for people that can't afford it.

Democrats believe the government should be bigger and do more for people. That's good because it means they take care of people more when they can't take care of themselves, like old people and poor people. The bad thing is that people have to pay more taxes and have a little bit fewer freedoms.
