As a mom of twins I hear this question alot. Here are the facts:
1. You have a 1 in 250 chance of having identical twins. Identical or monozygotic twins come from the same fertilized egg which splits. This is a spontaneous event in nature that is not impacted by age, race, family history or fertility drugs.
2. Fraternal or dizygotic twins can be impacted by family history. Dizygotic twins come from two seperate eggs that are both fertilized. Because the woman produces the eggs it is up to her to produce two eggs on the same cycle for a fraternal twin pregnancy to occur.
3. A history of twins is only relevent if it is on the woman's side of the family because it's her body that must produce the two eggs (instead of the typical one egg per cycle). The reason people say it "skips" a generation is because if your father's side is the one that the genetic pre-disposition towards twins comes from then he can't have twins but he can pass the genetic pre-disposition on to his daughters.
So, if your family has a history of twins and those twins are fraternal twins then there is an increased chance that you could have twins.

it usually skips a generation. My dad is a twin and his great grandfather was a twin. So we're expecting me or my sister to have twins in the future

It isn' the male part that decides, it would have to be running on your mom's side. Men give the sperm and we give the eggs. If I remember, it is a woman who either produces two eggs in one ovulation, or has the gene to allow one egg to be fetilized by two sperm. so I don't think so, since you twins seem to be on the male sides of your families, so it was probably a result of their wives. Good Luck

You have the same chance as anyone else does. Twins aren't genetic. Your family is just lucky I guess.
