since man already had numbers and rudimentary ways to use them,and years months and days are broken down with Field devices such as stonehenge and pyramidic calenders ,they continued to break downtime through logical progression, so i believe man was always really aware of the passage of moments,had a sense of historical events and needed a way to explain them to each other in away that made sense.to me ..time just is... therefore we as inquisitive beings measure it ;)-

Time is nothing but the measure how much the earth has rotated.
