Morally or Legally?

Here in Arkansas a Teacher (Deanna Bobo, in Greenwood, Arkansas) is just starting her 2nd trial for molesting (err, she said "loving") her 6th grade students. She is 34 and her first husband she married when she was 25, she had just started teaching 2 years before, he was 18. (She started teaching at 23). So, at 23 she was dating him already as a 16 year old. She was found guilty at her first trial, now she's on trial for another student, years ago.

Can a teacher fall in love with a student? In my opinion, NO. For one thing, they are in a position of authority and its hard on preteens and teens to distinguish between authority figures, either at home or school. Both are frightening because of the absolute power they have over them. Lets get real, all a teacher has to do to ruin a student is start a false rumor or mark a few things bad, and students aren't so stupid as not to know this. Its not an EQUAL SETTING where people are free to reciprocate or NOT. You either "give in" or your punished. Even if your not punished, there's always "what if . . . " What if the teacher tells something? What if they start stories? What if? Again, your not in charge or a postion of authority, THEY ARE!

No matter how it stacks up, IT CAN ONLY BE ABUSE on the side of the teacher because they are in the authority position.

If they "loved" the student they would quit or wait till the student graduated, then make their proclamations! However, they won't do that, because infatuation is always based on the physical, isn't it?

It's a question of ethics. Propriety dictates that teachers should maintain a "neutral stand" when it comes to dealing with students. Objectivity becomes an issue, and questions on whether the student deserves the grade given by the teacher not only places the teacher's credibility in bad light but also the capability of the student.

It is safest not to fall for your student (or for your professor) FOR THE TIME THAT THEY ARE STILL STUDENT AND TEACHER. After graduation, well... that's another thing.

It unethical but I don't think its illegal unless the student in underage.
I know teachers and students who have fallen in love but decided to either keep their relationship secret or not acknowledge it until the stduent was out of that class.
Once I met a really awesome woman at an art gallery opening party. Ended up going home with her. Next day is the first day day of school and it turns out she's my sculpture teacher. That was the best class I've ever been in...

Since 88% of all teachers are sick in the head it stands to reason that of course they could. Teachers are people that can't do. they can only teach you how to do it wrong. So falling in love with there student would fall in the doing it wrong catagory

Only if the teacher has serious problems.

Part of being a teacher is realizing the immaturity of the students and the ethical boundaries involved, and his/her responsibility to the student.

Yes, if the teacher is a professor and the student is a university student. Other than that, no. Gross.... and illegal.

it's possible, but it can lead to harsh consequences for the teacher, including termination and prison, depending on the age of the student

It happens, however for the teacher to act on it is quite unethical and to act on it when the student is underage is illegal.

It has happened repeatedly, but is unethical and immoral. It can also be illegal depending on age or laws (Texas has a law that makes it illegal no matter what). I would strongly discourage anyone from exploring such a relationship.
