always started with 50% of the asking price then gradually move up

or starts with 50% of the asking price, if the trader refused to give in then just walk-off[slowly], chances are there he would calls you back n offered what you wanted !

always remember that you can get those items at some others places so please compare the prices first before decided to buy any things

but don't bargain for half an hour then later decided not to pay for it, the trader would be very angry at you n may harass or used 4 letters word to curse you !

no bargain at shopping malls/complexs or supermarkets !

Be firm but polite, smile and show respect, do not show contempt or act superior. If the bargaining yields good results for you, honour the deal, don't walk away without closing the purchase.

However, don't forget that for most westerners traveling in Asia, getting a great bargain most of the time means saving of a few bucks, not much for us who are relatively wealthy, but a significant sum for those trying to make a living. So, go ahead and bargain, but do not go overboard for the sake of winning for the sake of winning, if you know what I mean...

Use some general principles in the psychology of bargaining.

1) Ensure that bargaining is welcomed.
2) Quote a reasonably low price - one that is lower than you would expect to get. Make sure you are ready to pay a price higher than this one.
3) Stall owners would usually then quote a price higher than this low price you proposed. Of course, if they are agreeable to your low price suggested, then that's good for you!

on top of what PM said, I would also add that you should always be willing to walk away. I found that when a person wouldn't budge on a price and I started to walk away, they would actually go lower than what I had offered.

Another tip is to not buy from the first stall you see, look around first and then buy.

You can threaten the person. joking

Anyways,
Just keep begging and begging, and if he says cannot, just walk away and eventually, they might call you back and give you the price you want.
