I have no reason to believe there is any sort of abuse involved with this, but I just have to ask if it's normal. The child was not premature and weighed 7 lbs (? ounces) at birth. I casually asked the mom what percentile the baby was in and her answer was "oh, I don't remember". I DO know it's the youngest of 3 children and the first to be breastfed and I know the other 2 children were not this small. I'm sure the mom is taking this baby to the pediatrician for it's regular check ups, she's not a neglectful mother, but I can't for the life of me figure out why this baby is so tiny! It's driving me nuts. My first thought was that it's not getting it's calories in the breastmilk but there's just no casual way to bring this up to the mom. We work together in daycare. Anyone else have a child this tiny?

GEEZ people, get a grip! I said I WAS NOT concerned that there was any type of abuse involved, I'm just curious because I've never seen a baby that tiny before and have been a little worried. Thanks to those of you who are providing real feedback rather than using this as a soapbox to preach at me.

Are either of the baby's parents small-framed? My baby is 15 months and just barely weighs 22 lbs. I can't remember what she weighed at 5 months, but it wasn't much. She was 6 lbs. when she was born. She's in the 9th percentile for weight

My doctor told me that they would be concerned if she wasn't developing so well (she's advanced, both motor- and language- skills) or if I weren't so small.

So basically, just watch the child's behavior. If the child seems to be developing normally, and isn't behind in many skills (it's natural for kids to be behind in SOME skill), then the baby should be okay.

Okay, yah. I don't understand why some of these people are b*tching about you "gossiping" or "minding your own business". I've seen babies that tiny myself and wondered too. I am glad, however, that you clearly stated there's no reason to believe there's any abuse happening. I would also be a little concerned that the baby wasn't getting enough calories based on the fact that the other siblings weren't that tiny and it's mom's first time to breast feed. If you're sure there's no abuse though don't worry about it. I guess it's just a tiny baby !

My daughter was 6 lbs at birth and only weighed 14 lbs at 1year which is not at all trippled birth weight as most pediatricians look for , however her doctor said she was very healthy. She is now 4 and weighs 29lbs all her friends are closer to 40, I suppose it may just be genetic I weigh 100 & my mother & sister are the same way. Also we are very healthy eaters, so I feed my children the same. No refined sugars, no food from a can jar etc.

yeah the baby is probably is petite. i have 2 girls ages 10 and 9. my oldest is just over 50 lbs. My 9 year old is about 45 lbs. They eat like there is no tomorrow. I have a 7 year old boy is who out weights them both. my girls are just petite like me. And the dr is not to concerned because he tells me that since i'm that way he's not to worried. I would say as long as her graph for her percentile stays steady, there is no reason to cause an alarm.

Dose the child have good color or is it pail. When the child is held in front of you with both hand and laying on it's back dose the child's arms and legs hang limp or are they active. Is the child's stomach bloted or is the child head larger and out of proportion with it's body. These are signs of starvation. If the child's is allergy to the milk it could be starving. This happen to our child and he nearly died even throw he was under a Dr. care. Change doctors. Our child was put on goats milk and started a good and fast improvement

I was almost as tiny till I reached 1yr but that was because I was a premiee. As to the child your talking about if the child is healthy and their isn't a case of abuse then there shouldn't be anything to worry about.
