I'm looking up apartments in Austin and I am planning on moving there in January. I am wondering how good of an area it is near the Highland mall area as far as traffic, crime, things to do, etc. Also if anyone can recomend a nice area that is fairly affordable and close enough to the city where getting to work in the morning won't be a problem. Thanks for your help everybody!!

I would never live close to Highland mall but that is me. It's just that a lot of poor people live around in that area and it's not very safe. I live on the Southwest side and it is really safe. Either go far up north like Round Rock or South like around Barton Creek Mall and farther south.

I have had several friends who have lived in that area. It is a pretty mixed area and a lot depends on the specific apartment complex. There are some that are well maintained and have decent security (gates, lights, on-sight security personnel). Other complexes look like they are falling apart, dirty, noisy, etc.

Because Austin is a college town, there are a lot of options for renting apartments. Also, that means there are a lot of apartments, especially near UT, that are overpriced. I would look around a lot before signing anything. Look more to the west and to the north of the city. Get away from the university or areas where there is a heavy concentration of university students. (Not that I have a problem with students, but it usually means overpriced rent and poor maintenance).

Best Areas -

Pflugerville
Round Rock
Westlake
Georgetown
Cedar Park

I would honestly not live right in the city. I would live in the sub cities. Pflugerville and Round Rock have the best schools if you have children. One good thing about Austin is you can tell the good neighborhoods from the bad ones really easily.

I would recommend Round Rock though, it is a growing town and is 5 minutes from Austin.

I'm deeeefinatly not a fan of anywhere near highland mall! I live south east side in a great (and cheap) apartment complex. And it is close to downtown (bout a 20 minute drive in heavy traffic) My advice to you...if you want a decent place, call ahead find out if they accept section 8 housing, if they do, you do not want to live there.

Round Rock is not 5 minutes from Austin, it's at least 20. Cedar Park is a good 30 minutes, usually more. You posted this question before (elsewhere?) and it got much a much better response; I'd say you consult that one.

Let me welcome you to Austin. If you want to find out about neighborhoods on my website www.crgr8homes.com under the info section there are some links to crime stats, schools and city guides, you should be able to find the info you seek. If I can be of any assistance let me know.
