First, you should double check to make sure that water is not leaking through the roof above the water heater. If this is not the case, than the water heater is likely leaking. You will need to contact a service man that will inspect the water heater and provide you with their recommended courses of action.
Good luck.

If you found water in the pan; it would be wise to start looking for another one. Water heaters can last 10 years, but this depends on how much you use them. If it is a small one and you use a lot of water, it's working real hard and won't last as long. IT also depends on your type of water, soft, hard, and the amount of minerals in it. Also, the life can be cut down if you keep the temperature real high. Lots of luck.

You need to find where the water heater is leaking from so you can determine if it's a fitting that can be replaced, or if it's the tank itself, which means you need to buy a replacement heater.

mine is around 8 years and still covered in warranty...the pressure relieve valve near the top was starting to leak so a plumber came and fixed that without any problem and now we still have a working water heater.
the next heater i get will be one of those smaller tank-less units...they are just great.
if its not water coming from any valve i would get a plumber in there....in fact i would just be safe and have one come in anyways...when water tanks like these go, they go fast and theres lots of damaged followed by that amount of water.

It sounds like you may have the temperature up too high, when the water is too hot, it will discharge through the pressure releif valve on the top or the side of unit, down the pipe into pan...If that is not the problem, then your inner tank is leaking and will need replacing...It really sounds like your pressure valve is discharging because the temp is too high, turn it down and I bet it stops...If this works, let me know....Journeyman plumber...
