I prefer a media filter, they do not break down,a space gaurd 5000 is both a media and electronic filter.I am not familiar with the specific product you've been quoted but it seems a bit pricey.Get another estimate for job if you haven't already.

Electronic air cleaners are known to produce ozone, which is a real problem if someone in your house has asthma. As a matter of fact there is not a single electronic air cleaner that is endorsed by the American Lung Association. There are several low-ozone models available now. Trane make a great one called Clean Effects. It is better than anything on the market. Also as mentioned here, the AprileAire media filters are wonderful, the AprilAire 5000 combines the best of electronic and media filters.

No ! Electronic air cleaner turns black dirt to white dirt. They don't keep your home any cleaner. A high efficiency air filter system like an Aprilaire spaceguard will do a better job, and the filters only need replacing once a year vs. monthly cleaning of E.A.C. systems. E.A.C.'s are a thing of the past.
