Some people are missing the point about affirmative action. Blacks have been singled out as being the main beneficiaries of the law. It is for all minorities and women of all colors. There is still so much racism, and that will probably never change. But if any of you were a minority or a women, would you feel the same way? You never know what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes. Usually people don't care if it does not apply to them. There are so many more issues at hand, and most of you are blessed enough not to be looked at or viewed as an animal. People look at all the bad apples and judge everyone as a group. There are some well deserved minorities and women out there who deserve a fair chance. I've personally been denied opportunities and have been more qualified and denied. I've always been a good student and worker, but it means nothing to most of you. I work my butt off not to be stereotyped.

I am a bit conflicted about this. Know that affirmative action is not just for minorities but for women and also immigrants. I also know that it is unfair to some who would not need this type of law.
However, the real question here is whether or not racism/sexism/etc is so prevalent that it should be assumed to have taken place. That is what affirmative action does, it assumes racism occured and then works to undo it by tipping the scales the other way.
Is racism and sexism that prevalent? Do people hire the best guy for the job? If it is voted down, then I would like to see the studies that follow. Many states and countries would love to see the results of post-affimative action Michigan.

Affirmative action is on the ballot next week here in Michigan, and I can't wait to vote it down. Forget about fairness. It's an insult to everyone, especially minorities.

yes, finally someone posts something about this topic. first off, affirmative action helps no one. it doesn't help the minorities, mainly blacks and latinos in the long run, and it is unfair to the whites, asians, and jews. even though asians are the smallest minority within the US, just because we have to live up to our "model minority-do nothing but study all day and make good grades" stereotype does not make smooth sailing for us. for example, my friend graduated as salutatorian, 4.0 GPA, president of 1/4 of the clubs at the school, freakin awesome swimmer and captain of the swim team, and was liked by everyone. she ended up not being accepted by any of the ivy league schools. the ivy league schools turn down 4 out of every 5 valedictorian that apply, in favor of minorities who grades can't even begin to compare. WTF?
