A personal statement is something referencing your own achievements, while an essay is a more general topic that shows your writing ability rather than promoting yourself. Some schools don't really differentiate between them, and some have both.

A personal statement is your idea of what might be the right way to go, this is really a philosophy class just agree with the teacher before the exam, do not find out what the teacher wants after the exam. Make the teacher spell the whole thing out in detail. You disagree the teacher will, flunk you and spread it around. Teacher personality, based on job title. Fact of Life.(HAZING)
A college essay? Always ask your teacher the ''game rules", typed, margins, hand-write, references, paper type, formal, informal, creative writing, research essay, ... do not let the teacher play a game with you by writing on a movie or story they never heard of ever. A title might be too long or ''off''. The sentence might be a fragment in a creative sentence in a creative essay, or a run-on sentence... some of these are matter of opinion.
