Printing started in Germany but soon spread to Italy where the Renaissance was in full swing. In Italy a new form of book became popular... unlike the old fashioned books which were often very large, the new books were quite small - in fact, they were the first pocket-sized books that you take around with you. In order to print very small characters to fit lot sof text in these books, the printing style of small, graceful curved letters almost similar to handwriting was developed and became known as italic.
