The bones don't dissappear, they just fuse together. Adults have a solid skull, but babies have the skull made of several different sections, which makes it slightly flexible, and capable of growth.

The joints also have a number of "bones" which join other bones. These are called the Ephyses (sp?) all animals have them, so if you're cooking up like the hank, or the shank of a cow or pig or something, you can see them. Near the joint, the bone has all these lumps, and if you cook it forever, they'll usually fall off into the separate bones.

When a creature reaches full size, these ephyses fuse to the rest of the bone. Actually, each one has a different range of time when they fuse, and archaeologists can study which ones have fused to determine the age a skeleton was when the person died.

So now you know.

when a baby is born, they're bone is really all made up of cartilage. as the child ages and matures into an adult the cartilage changes over into bone. and they fuse together to form the bones that we know and love. ex: the soft spot on an infant is cartilage that has not fused yet to form bone. it start out as fingerlike structures that come together to form the face. horrible disfigurations can occur if the bone does not fuse properly before birht.

well when a baby is born their bones have not yet connected to other bones, such when a baby is born you just don't let their neck go back because some of the bones have not yet connected to others. An adult has fully grown and connected bones.

as you grow older the cartilage between the bones fuse togerther making large bones, mostly in the head and the hands, and that is when a child will stop growing, because the bones have solidified.

The bones of a child are small and easy to bend, giving a child greater flexibility. As the child grows, his or her bones fuze together to give them more strength and stability, but reducing flexibility.
