I live in Halifax County in southside Virginia. My county is located in a very economically depressed reigon. About 75% of the people here are uneducated and there is a very large amount of african americans. The Virgina state governemnt does notrhing to help us. Meanwhile NOVA (Northern Virginia) has some of the richest people in the country, has the highest per capita income in the nation, and has the 2nd best education system in the U.S. The taxbase there is unbelievable and there is almost always a surplus of money. The Virginia State government never takes that money to help us poorer counties. Its almost if we dont exist. Why does the governemnt only help those that already have money?

I'm sorry the government won't help you. Time to start helping yourself. Get involved with developing your area, or even get into politics if you think that is a good way to help.

Excellent Question. I wonder if this is how our government is set up. In reading "The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman, the government has been taking jobs oversees (outsourcing work) since 1989, due to the internet to save corportations money. If our government has been outsourcing work to save rich more money, it certainly doesn't surprise me that it happens on a state level, as well as there no longer being a big three auto companies, as a result of this. How can union pres. and even governors fight this? This has become the American way these days. I've been to West Virginia, and I'm very aware of how many poor people there are there. There has had to be terrible mining disasters to bring pressure to make rules to get working resperators, for miners. We are talking peoples lives. I also find it intersting that we don't hear about the cancer causing elements in the environments. Just from smoking. I guess it's all just big business. I'm not being smart, this is just my life experience, and what I read, and have learned. We sign waivers to avoid law suits from cancer from Marathon. Yet they only talk about cancer from smokers. I read on the internet that in 35 states, women have rocket fuel in their breast milk. And yet, we wonder why the increase in breast cancer. There is so much we don't hear or read about. I have to search to find out a lot of information. I would suggest writing your senators and legislators. And encouraging others to do the same. The saddest thing to me is, the very people who need to vote, the poor and working class, often don't. I believe one person can make a change. They can talk to others, who then talk to othters. So there is hope, I am very politically active, and I'm just an average person. It all begins with one person to speak up as you are now!

You know you don't exist to the wealthy , they have what they want and would rather you stay out of sight and don't bother them .
If they can't see you they can ignore you . As you can see , they don't take into concentration that you might not the means to move , change jobs and pay for reeducating your self .
Some times it hard to change your circumstances .
I would say the negative answers were from Conservatives . They profess to be Christians , but don't follow Christ teachings
Which is to help the poor , feed the hungry , shelter the weary and love one another as you would him .
I'm sorry , you received no compassion from others here .
That's what is the matter with the world today .
Friend I hope things get better for you .

basically if you give a man a fish he comes back to you for fish again, teach a man to fish and he'll feed himself. this country is a republic and was designed to allow people to help themselves. we are not a socialistic country. people from every walk of life have excelled within the poor schools and managed to be very successful. there are loans for higher education if you qualify for school. universities take you on your grade point average and your SATs, as well as your charitable and extracurricular activities. my suggestion: quit complaining and get to studying get that grade point average up. it is your efforts that will help you succeed. not the governmnets efforts. there are financial aid counselors at the universities that make sure once you are accepted you have the money to continue in school. no excuses. it is on you not the government. i was a single teenage mom on welfare and am now very successful. working on my MBA. if i can do it anyone can..

Sadly, its all about the politics. Get everyone you know to go to the polls. They might start listening if they consider your county a threat to their power.

People who have money give money to politicians who already have money, so they can get re-elected so as to make more money. and pay back the people who have money, who gave them money, in the first place.
