if I should go through a travel agency or do it all myself? Also to people that have been there or live there what are some really awesome things to do, besides the usual?

if you want a more definite itenerary...with tours, etc...I would go through a travel agency. just simplifies things for you while you are out abroad.

I lived in Italy for 4 years. I would say try and go to the pre alps there near Aviano, Italy. Chek out Barcis and surrounding areas. it is outstanding! If you like easy boulder climbing and jumping off rocks and bridges into blue clear water..those are the places. if you want to go to a bar..drinking age is 18...go to Boobes, Cal Bar, Death Bar..those are in Aviano...lots of american military there...good partying :-)

If you are in Slovenjia...I definitely suggest Bled Lake..it is in Bled. Oh and try the capital there if you want some awesome art museums and stuff like that.

Austria...you can not really go wrong anywhere there, neat place.

Rome is dirty. Pisa is interesting...very touristy. Venice...you gotta go there. I like Verona a lot...Juliets balcony, etc.

Its been a long day...thats all i can think of right now

A travel agent will plan everything for you. If you do it yourself it will wind up costing much more money and time. You will need to have separate insurance on every thing in case you cant go, that is expensive and tedious. An agent will cover all your bases right down to the cab to the airport and changing your money to Euros...

The best thing to do is have your agent plan a few stops off the train. It goes from one end of the country to another. You can get a Euro pass and travel anywhere for one set price. Im not sure how long you have or where in Europe you are going. That makes a big difference.
If you get a chance to go to England, ride the train stops there. each stop is a whole new little World of it's own and only about 5 minutes apart.
If you are going to wine country, go on the tours.
Visit the major places of interest but take tours through your agent or hotel, they will be everything from the ticket on the tour bus to the entry fee into an exhibit.
Collect postcards in each place. If you have a hobby visit all the places in each area that matches your interests. Dont spend all day walking around in circles, that is very easy to do.
Have a blast!!

You just take a flight to Europe and take a Eurail pass. What do you need an agent for. Europe is very safe and nice to travel even on your own, friends can be found on trains. My son has trained trough most of Europe China, Thailand and so before the age of 20. I took my first cross Europe train month at the age of 17.

What are you Americans scared of? Europe is safer than any of the big cities in US, sorry check out the crime rate.

When You hit the trains ask fellow travellers what is awesome. Some 2 million European youngsters (16-25) eurotrain every summer. Compared to only 30 million americans even having passports (most for mexico and for old peple). So hit the road!

You will learn a lot these guardian angels have never seen.

If it's your first trip, use a travel agent or go on a tour. Besides, in this day and age traveling alone is not a good idea.

Do it yourself! Check out sites such as yeego.com to get great deals on good hotels (you can get a 3 or 4* hotel at the same price as dumpy hostels). Use tripadvisor.com to help you when choosing the hotel. Guest reviews are very useful.
And check out discount airlines for cheap travel (i got a flight on vueling.com from madrid to rome for 38Euros tax included, and i flew BMI from edinburgh to london for12 pound). Check out Vueling, transavia, easyjet, german wings, SN brussels etc.

Plan your trip way in advance using the net as a guide and think of the things you like to do. That way you get best prices. Europe has everything... good food (off the street / street cart food is great), great history and real nightlife. The important thing is to do the things you like... whether its sightseeing, art museum hopping, shopping, theatre, clubbing, eating...
