Before the Spanish invasions and the eventual migration of horses, mules and donkeys north into what we call the American southwest, the Hopi used foot power exclusively.

However, the Hopi as a rule have a long history of being fairly localized and didn't migrate much.

Most of the hopi tribe did not move from place to place. They built their villages near springs and fields. They used horses and sometimes wagons for transportation.

At what time in their history? Prior to the Spanish horse, they used a small travious, lightly loaded, pulled by a dog while they walked with packs. The women carried a double strap heavy pack while the men carried a small, one strap pack. This was so they could shed it quickly in case of danger or the appearance of game animals. the women carried babies and small children in papoose cradles strapped to their chest.
