G'day YoMomma,

Thank you for your question.

Odysseus plays a key role in The Iliad and is the central character in The Odyssey.

Some examples of his heroism are:

* he was first person ashore at Troy;

* he volunteered to fight Hector in a duel;

* he was selected as the bravest Greek warrior;

* he developed the Trojan horse.

In the Odyssey, he does the following:

* he frees the men from the Cyclops;

* he retrieves the men from the land of the lotus-eaters;

* he travels to the underworld;

* he braves Scylla and Charybdis;

* after numerous adventures, he returns home after ten years.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

In order to be and Epic Hero you have to had to go to the Underworld. Odysseus never goes to the underworld so he wouldn't be a Epic hero. Unfortunately there is a loophole. He is away from the world as he knows it for ten years and everyone thinks he's dead so it's basically used as the same thing. There is also divine intervention and he did all those things that the person listen above did. I have to read it in mythology and do a report comparing a Greek hero with a modern day hero, Odysseus is the trickiest and brightest one of all the Greek heroes. If that helps at all.

he's an epic hero because the Odyssey is an Epic. The hero in an epic is the Epic Hero. An epic is just the genre of the story. If you want examples, try when he had to take his people home from the Land of the Lotus Eaters (I made a SWEET *** flash on that) or when he escapes from the cyclops. Those are all heroic deeds.

In Ancient Greek mythology, a hero was considered someone who was favored by the gods.

Since Athena often goes out of her way to help him, it is obvious he is favored by the gods (except for Poseidon, of course...he wants the guy dead), so he is considered an epic hero.

Odysseus was picked on by Neptune and he survived. He learned what was really important to him, took a journey, even going to Hades. He suffered and lost and finally gave up his pride to appeal to the gods.
