Bryan was a thoroughly decent man who represented farmers and laborers when very few folks did, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He fought in Congress for a living wage, rights of association of working men, farm subsidies, federal disaster relief, a strong monetary policy, arts and science funding.

Unfortunately, he got trapped into representing the State of Tennessee in the Scopes Monkey Trial and that tarnished his reputation and killed him off.

He was Secretary of State under Wilson and resigned rather than cooperate with the US getting into World War One.

I always associate him with the "cross of gold" speech and the Scopes Monkey Trial. I have both a negative and a positive impression of him. Bryan ran unsuccessfully for president three times.
