I think it was a song about just being yourself and not caring what all your friends thought. Not following peer pressure, but dancing if you want to. "You can dance if you want to, you can leave the world behind...but if you don't dance, and your firends don't dance, then you're no friend of mine..."

you can dance if you want to you can leave your friends behind -- if you wan meaning well its safe to dance while everyone is takin a chance. thats why its the safety dance. its safe to be a dancing fool when its not safe to be a fool.
