2000 Mailbu was running great. Oil light went on last weekend. Lots of banging and knocking. Oil dipstick was full. We replaced the oil pump (big project) and the knocking sounds are still there. My dad thinks it has something to oil pump drive. We can't figure out how to remove the oil pump drive... is it under the manifold? Is it behind the engine? Thanks in advance for any help. (And, yes, I do come back to read the answers.)

It is under the throttle body, just behind the thermostat. It is a round cap with a clamp on it and a 15 mm bolt holding it down. It looks like the bottom of a distributor without the top on it. They don' t usually go bad. What usually happens to 3100's is the intake manifold leaks coolant into the engine and ruins the bearings. They also break camshafts just to the passenger's side of the number 5 and 6 cylinders. When this happens the engine will still run( rough, but run) on the other 4 cylinders but the camshaft can't turn the oil pump because it is driven by the piece that broke off. I think this is your problem. Take the front valve cover off and crank the engine, if the rocker arms on the cylinder nearest the driver's side aren't moving the cam is broke.

B H said it very well. Very common problem that he described. I wish you luck.
