and why is the donkey a symbol for the democratic party?

The elephant is the symbol of the Republican Party, because during the time of Pres. Abraham Lincoln, the King of Siam (sorry, don't have his name -- I think King Rama IV), sent some elephants to Lincoln, as a gesture of admiration and good will.

Sorry, don't know about the donkey symbol.
